John(txic) Posted 29 April , 2016 Share Posted 29 April , 2016 I have come across a report in the (contemporary) local press of this man's death, and am having difficulty believing a word of it... It claims he survived the loss of HMS Good Hope, and then was aboard the Lusitania and again survived. The article is unclear (to me, anyway) whether he was rescued by the Lusitania, or simply transferred to her later. Transferring to HMS Tipperary, his ship survived the Battle of Jutland only to be sunk 10 weeks later. His records on a popular genealogical website do not seem to support service aboard the first two ships mentioned above. Is it possible he might have served aboard Lusitania in any capacity? Methinks he was spinning a yarn in the pub one night whilst on leave. Suggestions welcomed. Plant, Stkr J T DH 2.6.17.pdf
Michael Lowrey Posted 29 April , 2016 Share Posted 29 April , 2016 The story makes no sense. Good Hope was sunk with no survivors. As for Lusitania, why would a RN sailor even be on an unarmed liner making an Atlantic crossing? Definitely sounds like a pub story...
horatio2 Posted 29 April , 2016 Share Posted 29 April , 2016 It is possible he served in GOOD HOPE II, III or IV. all hired drifters but none of them was sunk. GOOD HOPE III was based on HMS COLLEEN at Queenstown when the LUSITANIA was sunk and may have been involved in the rescue, the story having later been 'modified'. The HMS TIPPERARY story is also impossible. She was sunk on 1 June after the main Jutland actions, so he could not have been given seven days leave after the battle. horatio2 Posted 29 April , 2016 Share Posted 29 April , 2016 So, never drafted to HMS COLLEEN. A drifter is an unlikely draft for a Special Service stoker anyway.
