Dear Ian

Have checked the London Gazette

Only 2 Dunnicliff - Edward by name

My Great Uncle was George William Dunnicliff / Dunicliff

There is no other reference

As i have the Victory medal has a cluster but i would love to know what he did to warrant it

Is there any other way of determining the issue of the cluster?

It is unlikely that you will ever discover why he was "Mentioned in Despatches",it could be for a plethora of Reasons, from assisting in a Trench Raid to Bringing the Commander his tea for a long period, the list of Names "Mentioned" runs into many 10s of 1000s & very very few are accompanied by a Description of Why they were so rewarded, you may just have to be content to know that for whatever reason they stood out a bit from the Rest, ;)

The Medal Index Cards will usually have a seperate card for MiD[Try also Dunnicliffe with an "E" & any other spelling you might consider]

Guest Ian Bowbrick

THe MiD MICs held at the PRO are an incomplete series and I have rarely mentioned in service records. You could try the Unit war diary in the WO 95 series. Again a bit hit and miss. A hard one this. :(
