Hi,

This postcard is marked "RFA Artillery school Larkhill, including 2Lt/Capt. J.Dean 1917" with an Ormskirk address.

I believe him to be 2Lt / A-Capt. Josiah Dean MC, his MIC has an Ormskirk address. He proceeded overseas in 1917 but I believe the 2 West Lancs was broken up shortly after.

Whilst trawling for details I found the attached entry from the LG. but can't find the other notifications referred to.

Any information regarding the LG. notifications or his overseas service would be appreciated.

The London Gazette notifications that you note in your post that are indicated as cancelled involve his appointment as adjutant and as an Acting Captain. They are hard to find and one of the dates is incorrect (it should be 5 Dec 1917).

Captain Josiah Dean, MC, RFA

Educated at Preston Agricultural College

Enlisted in the Squadron of the Inns of Court OTC as a Private (No. 8627) on 3 Jan 16

Admitted to RFA Officer Cadet School on 5 Aug 16

Commissioned 2nd Lieut., RFA on 24 Nov 16

Served in France and Flanders

Appointed Acting Captain

Wounded on 9 Apr 18 and on two other dates

Military Cross in the London Gazette of 16 Sept 18 for service with B Battery, 276 Brigade, RFA with the following citation: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while section commander of three forward guns during an enemy attack. Under heavy enemy barrage he kept his guns going all day, and when the telephone dug-out was knocked out by a direct hit, he ran forward and rescued the wounded. He set a fine example of courage and energy."

Lived at 36 St Helens Road, Ormskirk, Lancashire

Many thanks for your time.

The extra information concerning his service and wounding/s is greatly appreciated. His MIC. has eligibility for the SWB, but due to the vagaries of Ancestry I have been unable to find him in the SWB rolls.

I had an address for him of Latham Park, Ormskirk from the postcard.

Josiah Dean was born on 11 September 1879 at Pimbo Lane, Upholland, Lancashire. His parents were John Dean, a farmer, and Ann Dean, formerly Kerfoot. He was educated at Upholland Grammar School and Preston Agricultural College, and prior to military service he was head assistant agent to the Earl of Lathom.

He attested on 3 January 1916 as Private 8627 Inns of Court OTC. His wife was Dorothy (married 1912) and their address in 1916 was "Croppers", Hall Lane, Lathom, but by 1920 they were living at "White Rails", Ormskirk.

On 18 April 1918 he was badly wounded in France, receiving gun shot wounds to the face, head and both arms, and also suffering from neurasthenia. He had previously been gassed twice in May and June 1917. He returned to England on 6 May 1918, and as noted above relinquished his commission due to ill health on 26 December 1919. A medical report in early 1920 said that he had "attacks of foreboding dread, sleep variable wakes up perspiring freely, headaches".

The above is all from his service file at TNA. Despite all of this, he lived to the age of 88 and died on 28 July 1968. He is buried at St Peter & St Paul's Churchyard in Ormskirk, and as you can see from the headstone, his son Gordon was a casualty of WW2.
