markl Posted 28 November , 2004 Share Posted 28 November , 2004 This weekend I visited Merville Cemetry and came across a gravestone with two names on it. (When I work out how to resize the photo I will post it !) 7308 Lance Corporal A B Hunt (Northamptonshire Regiment) & 51435 Private J A Scott (Princess Patricia's C L I) On the face of it there appears to be no connection (not even the same nationality) can any pals think why they would br buried together? Were their regiments fighting in the same battle and they were simply found together? Thanks
Alison Arnold Posted 28 November , 2004 Share Posted 28 November , 2004 Other than they both died on the same day I can't think of anything constructive at the moment. Best wishes Ali
markl Posted 28 November , 2004 Author Share Posted 28 November , 2004 They did indeed die on the same day (18th August 1915) but then again so did many others.

Marco Posted 6 December , 2004 Share Posted 6 December , 2004 The usual reason is that the original grave markers were less wide and that with the new stones they just hadn't enough space in a row to give every one a seperate gravemarker. A very common thing to find in cemeteries. Merville is mostly a well laid out hospital cemetery hence the burials in chronological order. A more exotic reason could be a bombardment on the hospital resulting in two bodies being so, euh, mingled that they were buried in one grave. Option #1 is more likely though.
