JIMBODIXON Posted 15 April , 2016 Share Posted 15 April , 2016 Oops! Hi everyone, I am a first timer to the Forum but a longtime follower. I have a leather cased torch which has a inscription carved into the case "A.T. COURT ROYAL FLYING CORPS. 42(?) Squadron R.F.C. Can anyone tell me about this person or point me in the direction of further research? I will try to attach some pics when I figure out how to do it. regards, Jim
IPT Posted 16 April , 2016 Share Posted 16 April , 2016 I can find papers for 59879 Albert Thomas Court, 41702 Arthur Thomas Court and 27332 Albert Thomas Joseph Court, but no mention of 42nd Sqn that I can see.
JIMBODIXON Posted 16 April , 2016 Author Share Posted 16 April , 2016 Thanks Lieut-General. Do the papers on the two men mention squadrons? The detail on the case is unclear and 42 squadron is only my guess. Also, what other info ,if any, are in the papers? Hope the attached pic is clearer as to inscription. nieuport11 Posted 16 April , 2016 Share Posted 16 April , 2016 There is a casualty card for ATJ Court - he was gassed 11.9.17, but no squadron shown The TNA files referred to above are: Albert Thomas Court AIR 79/543/59879 Arthur Thomas Court AIR 79/393/41702 Albert Thomas Joseph Court AIR 79/278/27332 The squadrons should be mentioned in the files, but a fee is payable

HarryBrook Posted 17 April , 2016 Share Posted 17 April , 2016 Looks a bit posh for an erk. Could it be "A. J. COURT"? An A. J. Court gazetted 2nd Lt. in this London Gazette, R.F.C. General List 9.9.1916. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29768/supplement/9463 Edit to add: Full name Adrian James Court. service record on findmypast, but cannot see 42 Squadron http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fair76%2f107%2f0%2f0581&parentid=gbm%2fair76%2f18916&highlights=%22%
BFBSM Posted 17 April , 2016 Share Posted 17 April , 2016 (edited) Jim, I have just looked at A J Court, his full name Adrian James Court, is an Australian, records here: http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=3431441, was commissioned as a Temporary 2nd Lt into the RFC on 15 April, 1914. His RAF records available on FindMyPast (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fair76%2f107%2f0%2f0581&parentid=gbm%2fair76%2f18916). The latter papers show him posted to 207 Squadron having trained to fly Handley Page bombers. He was originally a member of 7th Battalion A.I.F. with number 92. nieuport11 Posted 17 April , 2016 Share Posted 17 April , 2016 You can view a scrambled version of AJ Courts record using the TNA image viewer http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8249561 and it shows that he did indeed serve with 42Sq, and later was injured with 207Sq Smart thinking Harry! BFBSM Posted 17 April , 2016 Share Posted 17 April , 2016 Jim, This document may be of interest to you: Particulars of officers and record of service. You can order a copy of it from The National Archives, or ask if a member here can make a copy for you when they visit the archives next (there may be a cost involved). JIMBODIXON Posted 19 April , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 April , 2016 Hi All,A huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to delve into this for me. On closer scrutiny under the right light it does indeed appear that the "T" might be "J". The tail of the J is very light but is there. I did wonder why a lowly erk would have a bit of officers kit, but thought no more of it. I purchased the torch at the Feb 2015 Berwick swap meet here in Victoria so the Australian connection fits in nicely with your findings.Jim
Smith Posted 19 April , 2016 Share Posted 19 April , 2016 Hi Jim, You may have already seen this but here's A.J.Court's page from the Australian Society of World War One Aero Historians site: http://fm12.littleman.com.au/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=ASWW1%20Aero%20Historians&-loadframes He was born in Brighton so unsurprising that you found this in Victoria! Lovely artefact BTW. Best, Tim
JIMBODIXON Posted 19 April , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 April , 2016 Thanks Tim, I have now gathered a lot of info on this man. It would appear he was a first day lander at Gallipoli but I must do further research on this. He was very lucky to come out of it, being wounded at Gallipoli and surviving his term with the RFC. regards Jim PS once again thanks to everyone who has assisted with this
Guest Posted 23 August , 2018 Share Posted 23 August , 2018 (edited) Hi Jim, I found your name at the British & Commonwealth Military Badge Forum as having three broken groups of medals including one for 1122 Pte N Stephenson 13 Bn. This is my relation Noble Stephenson whose original photographic portrait I have. I was wondering would you consider selling this medal at any stage as I would be very keen to acquire it. Guest Posted 3 October , 2019 Share Posted 3 October , 2019 The 42nd squadron served as a reconnaissance squadron during the first world war. They used the British BE2 two-seated scout planes and later the British RE8 two-seaters. The first image is a BE2 while the secend is a RE8, both being made by the British Royal Factory.
