RMT Grampian

Hi, I am currently trying to track down information for a friend on his Grandfather's naval service. We have little information other than his name: S/Lt James Louis Roy, RNR Comissioned 26 August, 1916. The only other information is engraved on a silver cigarette case. It reads:

RMT Grampian

RN College Greenwhich

HMS Hermione

HMS Victory

HMS Wallington

I have found at least some information on all of the ships/shore establishments except RMT Grampion. If anyone can shed further light on what or where it was, the nature of the facility, etc I would be most grateful.

Further, if anyone else might have information on how I might obtain further information about S/Lt Roy's naval service in WWI, I would greatly appreciate that as well. Thank-you!

Try searching the net for RMS Grampian an Allan Line vessel.

Hmmm, that provides a lot of info, including a Halifax connection. Any possibility that the "T" in "RMT" was indicative of "Transport" or something similar, as in a ship secured by the Admiralty to transport Troops, etc?

Yes T = Transport

Likely that there has been free use of abbreviations.

HMT = HM Transport therefore it looks like the T has been used to replace the S of RMS.

Ships were as you suggest requisitioned for Transport use.
