And many, many thanks! Some learning to do there... Mutley at post 12 says he was entitled to a trio - I wonder where his other two are?

So, service on HMS Swiftsure, 26.08.16 - 26.04.17, gets him the BWM and BVM. That sea service would be - according to Wikki - when she was on Atlantic convoy escort duty with the 9th Cruiser Squadron, before going home and being paid off at Chatham on 26 April. How fascinating!

Thanks to Corisande I have a copy of Banks' service record, which I duly post here in the hope that one of you naval bods can explain one bit to me. The reference to a "Th. Medal" and its pension in the bottom right hand corner, under remarks... What medal would that be?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Julian

It is "Tr. Medal" = Traced Medal. This refers to the administration task which led to the award of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1914. Ditto his pension in 1921.

Gosh, that was quick! Ta very much! So, that's two I have to find to put everything back together - this and the BVM, although, as I understand it, not everyone was given a BVM.

Not strictly true. The 1914-15 Star was awarded, under Admiralty rules, to those who saw active service between 5th August 1914 and 31st December 1915. Recipients of the 1914-15 Star automatically qualified for the British War and Victory Medals.

Not certain I follow - remember I know nothing about medals or navy things. Have I missed something blatantly obvious? I.E., how would he have qualified for a 1914-1915 Star as he seems to have been home-based then? I can see from my very limited knowledge how he would qualify for a BWM and BVM because of his service in the Atlantic - but a star as well?

He was on active service in the Royal Navy. He did not have be serving in a ship at sea. Simple as that.

OK, like I said I am a complete out-of-it with these medal things... I assumed one had to be in a 'War theatre' to qualify... So, that's three to look for - LS and GC medal, star and BVM... Bayonets are easier! But, once again the help from you and others is appreciated!
