seaJane Posted 3 March , 2016 Share Posted 3 March , 2016 I came across this tonight while looking for an illustration: I presume it was for training purposes? Is that the Ouse or the Cuckmere estuary in the distance? sJ
Knotty Posted 3 March , 2016 Share Posted 3 March , 2016 Hi sJ It's the Cuckmere estuary. Is the painting still in the Canadian War Museum? John
seaJane Posted 3 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 March , 2016 Thanks John. I presume it's still in Canada - I found the image on Wikimedia Commons. sJ
seaJane Posted 3 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 March , 2016 Answered my own question: "This painting by F.H. Varley, a future member of the Group of Seven, depicts a training exercise in Seaford, England. Soldiers emerge from a gas hut wearing respirators attached. Training to protect against gas attacks gradually became more realistic to better reflect combat conditions." And confirming it is in the Canadian War Museum. Moonraker Posted 3 March , 2016 Share Posted 3 March , 2016 Yes, good picture. I didn't have much idea what a gas chamber looked like. Thanks for posting. BBC Radio Interview More about Varley. Moonraker
seaJane Posted 3 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 3 March , 2016 Thank you both, and especially for the links, Moonraker. I was briefly all excited about Dymock on account of the eponymous Poets, but Dymock Farm, Seaford, is not the same as the village of Dymock in Gloucestershire... sJ
Dust Jacket Collector Posted 4 March , 2016 Share Posted 4 March , 2016 I was briefly all excited about Dymock on account of the eponymous Poets, but Dymock Farm, Seaford, is not the same as the village of Dymock in Gloucestershire... sJ Not the same, but it is an excellent farm shop. I would guess from the picture that Dymock farm probably covers much the same area now.
SiegeGunner Posted 4 March , 2016 Share Posted 4 March , 2016 Wonderful view down the Cuckmere Valley. Looking on Google Earth, there is an isolated patch of rough grass and bushes (surrounded by cultivated land) at the approximate location of the gas huts ... perhaps because the ground is still contaminated. As I recall, from a WW1 Study Day at Newhaven Fort a couple of summers ago, there is a locally-based professional archaeologist who has undertaken a study/survey of the Seaford training grounds, and he will no doubt know more about the gas training site. His name is Luke Barber and he and the gas chamber painting are mentioned in this geocaching link ... https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4K3J6_ww1-the-gas-chamber-at-seaford-capt-f-a-varley Mick

s.hibbitt Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 Curious about this and some time on my hands last week I had a look on Google Earth and set off to explore. I'm a learner with enthusiasm but would like to share my pics to see what you think ?
s.hibbitt Posted 21 April , 2021 Share Posted 21 April , 2021 The stone was behind me and slightly more uphill but also between there and what I think may be the farm I came across this . Thought's ? I can't do it justice but as you can see from the distance it's quite large but shows up on Google Earth as a small square. If I came across this on my visits to France and Flanders I'd be thinking it was a shell hole, it looks to be in a straight line to my previous pics.
