8089 Pte Walter Bowering 2nd Btn Somerset Light Infantry's MIC shows that he entered Theatre of War 4a on 7/7/15. The British War and Victory Medal roll states "Att. Signal Service" and shows Theatre of War 6b. The 1914/15 Star roll shows 4a. The 2nd Btn Som Li didn't serve in Africa, can anybody shed any light on this man's war service?

not specifically on him but I have seen a few Coldstream Guards serving in Africa both during and pre WW1. They probably where sent there as had a particular skill (or maybe just no one liked them :w00t: ) and like your man on attachment

have you checked sites such as FMP and ancestry for his papers? Papers also exist for men born before 1901 who served after ww1 - there is a thread on the forum somewhere with lists of names

Greetings

Brigade and Divisional HQs plus all the British administrative HQs that were established in captured German territory needed signallers, so Britain supplied men on 'extra-regimental postings' to man these posts.

Quite a few came from the Regular Army battalions that spent the war in India.

Many thanks for this information. The 2nd Btn SLI were in India for WW1 and it seems that

my man did indeed serve in Africa. Shame his service record hasn't survived.
