Remembered Today:

'Wonder Woman' and the Great War

I was in London round and about Trafalgar Square for quite a lot of yesterday, and noticed that the central area was fenced off. Didn't spot any GW-era costumes, though.

The mind, it boggles...

 And there was I this morning hesitating about posting a link to a soft-porn film about Mata Hari. (In the end, I didn't.) :)

Edit: I did post a link to another film about Mata Hari that is "in development".

I watched the trailer. There was Great War content in there? Are you sure?  I had better watch it again... a few times, maybe. :P

Remembering the bile directed at a fairly harmless TV drama about nurses in the Great War last year, I can think of a few folk on the Forum whose heads are going to explode when this movie comes out!

I did notice one of the cables on the eindecker's rigging was three inches too far back, but otherwise it looked ok to me...

It's odd that they have set the origin section of the film in the Great War as in the comics it us in the Second World War, which you would think would make a much easier sell to US audiences. Chris Pine is tying himself into another very lucrative franchise as his character, Steve Trevor, will probably feature in the Justice League films that are slated to be made soon.

DC may have wanted to separate it in time from Marvel's Super Soldier, Captain America, but who knows? I have a friend who is an expert on these things but I have learnt not to ask anymore! Can you imagine people talking at infinite length about such "niche" subjects?!

That sounds like a good explanation Steve. My love of 60s comic books almost rivals my fascination with the Great War, so friends and family have two 'niche' topics they tend to steer clear of!

I can remember my children rolling around laughing while this garbage was on TV.

One man's garbage, is another child's favourite TV ;)

'Idiotic crap' is terribly well-chosen, Mr Filsell, but I confess to a sneaking regard for the sheer chutzpah involved in making it.  It provides work and income for plenty of people (and the Chancellor), and entertains quite a few people at the local multiplex.

is it such a bad thing? There's no way anyone's going to think it's real (surely?) so far better than the utterly b&ll&cks Crimson Road referenced above, which purported to be an historical series but was so way-off the mark even the BBC got the message.

Leave it alone. Sheldon Cooper will demolish it soon enough.

Well, my children thought it utter garbage. And the youngest was about 5 at the time. He thought it garbage as well.

Others have their own concerns:

Have her armpits been photoshopped?

My interest in this thread was prompted by a feature in today's Daily Telegraph Magazine about Gal Gadot, who did her mandatory two years' training with the Israeli Defense Force where she trained in Krav Maga, the army's "trademark mixed martial  art defence system". She then trained other soldiers, mostly men.

You can have your own Wonder Woman.

I've no intention to see the film, the description of which reminds me a little of that awful 1987 film

I've just seen the film, and actually I thought the film, and the special effects, were really good.  The story line is what you would expect, but IMO the Great War scenes - the uniforms, equipment, arms - were spot on.  I'm sure there will have been errors, but a far better standard than you would normally expect, with lots of attention to detail. The male lead even sporting a Winchester trench gun in one sequence.  The military costumier was  Terry Facer. Yes, I'd recommend watching it.

They do pensioner specials at Vue cinemas in the UK at £3.99 with a cup of tea and biscuits thrown in !!!

Many, many years ago at school I was taught that “Fiction” required the “willing suspension of disbelief”. Wonder Woman is fiction and that needs to be accepted.

If the film kindles an interest in the GW,  it has served the cause, especially if they are young and of any of the modern genders.

Well, they were children - from about 4 to 12 if I remember correctly.

And the film audience for this kind of idiotic crap is huge. Worrying really.

I may well become part of that audience on Tuesday December 29 at 1930 when it's being screened on ITV. The Daily Telegraph listings highlight it as "Film of the Week" and mentions that Wonder Woman's "horny-headed foe of old is overdue another thwarting"

I am not given to "rolling around laughing" but I wonder how much of the film I shall watch.

Anyone else recently see;

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.

Paints the original WW in quite a different light!

I guess the original would be WWI !

Newsflash: there's a second in the making... on 1984 ... and she has not aged a bit... what wonders...

OK... I'll find the door!

Seriously, I did NOT want to see the first movie, so I won't corona-cue to the cinema when this one comes out.

I didn't watch it to the end when it was first shown on Sky, but give it a go (just suspend belief).

Last night I duly recorded "Wonder Woman" as I watched something else. When I'd finished that, I started on the recording about two-fifths of the way through, quickly losing interest in the ancient stuff and fast-forwarding, slowing down now and then. Not my genre at all. But the scenes set in London looked very authentic, with lots of detail.

By then I'd caught up with the live screening, so watched that, occasionally flicking to other channels, before viewing the last 15 minutes with the climatic duel.
