brindlerp Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 As part of my family history research, I have recently discovered this site owned by Warwickshire County Council funded by the National lottery. http://www.windowsonwarwickshire.org.uk/default.asp " "Windows on Warwickshire" aims to promote access to historic collections representing the very best of Warwickshire's heritage, culture and personalities. The project web site contains over 10,000 fascinating items - many made available in digital format for the first time. A wide range of resources are represented - including old photographs, rare documents, maps, historic buildings, art, letters, fossils, literature, everyday memorabilia and much much more. Each item is interpreted by relevant subject experts and the web site database can be explored using a variety of powerful search tools. A series of "Spotlights" focus on key aspects of the collections and give users the added opportunity to improve their understanding of Warwickshire's unique past. " Among the many photographs organised by town/village, there are quite a few relevant to the WW1 period. A selection is listed below by title of the photograph with link, for this period:- A large crowd around an old British tank, in Alcester, with perhaps a band and placards about discharged sailors and soldiers, possibly armistice celebrations in 1918 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=6286 Group of soldiers, possibly the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, on the lawn of the Holly Bush. 1915 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...=0&resource=543 A soldier of the 1st Kings Own Scottish Borderers riding his horse in Bilton. 1915 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=7046 Soldiers of the 1st Kings Own Scottish Borderers passing through Bilton. 1915 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=7047 HMA Eta on army manoeuvres at Bilton Grange. 1913 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=5411 HMA Delto during army manoeuvres at Bilton. 1913 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=5410 Soldiers with a nurse in the grounds of Bilton Hall hospital during the 1914 - 18 war. http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=7042 4th & 5th batteries of the Howitzer brigade at Bawnmore, Bilton. 1911 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=5408 4th & 5th Batteries of Howitzer brigade at Bawnmore, Bilton. 1911 http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.or...0&resource=5409 Lt. Terry Carter Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 Richard Thankyou for all the time and effort you took in placing the post. There are some really interesting pictures there. The Royal Warwicks on the Lawn of the Holly Bush are members of one of the Birmingham Pals Battalions. As you can see they are wearing their navy blue uniforms and leather equipment. Judging by the snow on the ground it is possibly taken in February 1915. Regards Terry p.s On further examination I would say a group of men from the 1st Birmingham Battalion somewhere in Sutton Coldfield.
Terry_Reeves Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 Richard Just to echo Terry Carter. Thanks for the effort you have made in providing the links. The originals are in Warwick County Record Office, Warwick. The group of RE's marching past the Pump Rooms seem to be 213 Army Troops Company, who were formed from local men in the spring of 1915. Graeme Fisher Posted 26 November , 2004 Share Posted 26 November , 2004 There's a similar site for Staffordshire, http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/, with some good pictures. Any other counties? This seems to be a national project. Graeme
vickers Posted 26 November , 2004 Share Posted 26 November , 2004 http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/, I looked at this sight as my wifes father was in the North & South Staffordshire Regiment from 1939-1944. We found a photo of a group of soldiers on Dunkirk Beach and one of the men was her father. Cheers Chris
