MikeyH Posted 5 February , 2016 Share Posted 5 February , 2016 Yes, a German 'ersatz', open muzzle ring is normal, there were a number of variants of this type. Someone who knows more than I, will no doubt be along presently. Mike.

Yes, an Erstaz bayonet, made between October/November 1914 and sometime in 1915. This is basically Carter's Type 4. The number is almost certainly Turkish: large numbers of these were sent to Turkey in about 1916-1917. The mark on the blade is the German Inspector's fraktur mark - there might be one like it on the blade spine. The open 'muzzle ring' is to allow it to be fixed to the Gew.71, the Gew.88, or the Gew.98. Trajan EDIT: Many of the ones sent to Turkey were shortened - this one wasn't! trajan Posted 5 February , 2016 Share Posted 5 February , 2016 See what you mean about the blade spine mark - it does look different from the ricasso mark... I'll think on that, but both are a bit weakly stamped making it difficult to say what they are. BYW, forgot to say, it is in nice condition, better than the ones I have - any markings on the back of the frog? Trajan
