roger Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 The thread on what equipment was carried by artillerymen made me wonder what was carried by Sappers. I was thinking Particularly of the Field Companies that followed the infantry during attacks to consolidate positions. Did the wear the usual infantry equipment and carry Rifles as well as spades, picks sandbags etc.? I expect they did but can't remember seeing any photo's or descriptions of them. Roger. Terry_Reeves Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 Roger The RE Field Companies were equipped in the same manner as the infantry, but were not issued with bayonets. Each RE section had a two- horsed tool cart which carried their basic engineering equipment. An RE field company section during WW1 was roughly the equivilent of an infantry platoon.
