ploop4444 Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 I Loved "Generals Die In Bed". I read it in english class as a class novel and I loved it so much, I bought my very own copy. So if any of you have some suggestions for any other great world war 1 novels, I'm all ears, If you wouldn't mind giving me a brief description of the book, that would be great Thanks, Justin

Guest webbhead Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 Hi Justin, If you're interested in other Great War novels from a Canadian perspective, read Timothy Findley's The Wars (1977). Otherwise Sebastian Faulk's Birdsong (1994) is a great read. For novels closer to the action (i.e. by people who were there), get the Penguin Classics translations of Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) and Henri Barbusse's Under Fire (1916). Many scenes in Barbusse influenced Harrison's novel, including the one where a soldier finds a decayed foot in a boot. Harrowing stuff, but worth reading. Cheers. marc leroux Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 The latest translation of Under Fire (translated by Robin Buss is far superior to earlier translations. The language is much crisper and more vivid. marc
Paul Hederer Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 Hello, See the thread "Best Novel of the Great War?" currently active in this area of the forum. It's been giving me some great ideas for novels I will be reading in the future. Paul
Guest webbhead Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 Hey Marc: I agree about the Robin Buss translation of Under Fire. Its the version I've read, and includes a good introduction by Jay Winter, one of the war's premier scholars. For those interested, its Penguin Classics (silver spine) ISBN: 0141187050 Cheers.
