Durham Light Infantry

For anyone interested in the DLI, if you haven't yet seen Naval & Military Press's Booklist Issue 87, several regimental histories appear for the first time, including:

1. 'The Durham Light Infantry' by Lieut-Col the Hon. W. L. Vane, originally

published in London by Gale & Polden Ltd in 1914.

2. 'The Durham Forces in the Field ...' by Captain Wilfrid Miles, originally published

by Cassell & Co in 1920. This book will be of particular interest to those

readers wanting more information about the Service Battalions.

3. 'The DLI at War' by Major David Rissik. This is a history of the regiment in the

Second World War, which was first published in 1953 by the Regimental Depot.

4. 'Faithful: The story of the DLI' by S. G. P. Ward (London: Thos Nelson and

Sons Ltd, 1962). Original copies are now difficult to find, and expensive to

buy. The work is, really, the only reasonably complete comprehensive history

of the regiment albeit it was published over forty years ago.

5. '8th Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry, 1939-1945' by Major J. P. Lewis, MC

and Major Ian English, MC, which book has been out of print for many years.

For anyone who has not used N & M before, their web site can be found at www.naval-military-press.com. Their credit card order line is: 01825 - 749494, and books can be ordered by E-Mail: order.dept@nmpbooks.com.

I also should recommend the book Into Battle By:Ernest Parker. He was a member of the 10th Bttn DLI during the Great War. It is one of my favorite books and well recommended. It was republished by Leo Cooper in 1994 and is widely available on the second hand market. It describes vividly his experiences during the war as a ranker and later as an officer in the Royal Fusiliers. He participated in Loos, Somme, Arras, and Passchendaele. Bill
