Stuart Brown Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 Welcome to the group. I think it is, or similar to, the Portugese Order of Aviz.
Glosters Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/3908/avis.htm It states that the Military Order of Avis was abolished in 1910 but restored in 1918. Steve
Guest shenkursk Posted 24 November , 2004 Share Posted 24 November , 2004 Direct hit! That is exactly what it is. According to Werlich: "Military Order of Aviz - Established in 1144 and confirmed in 1162 by King Alfonso I. In 1789 Queen Mary of Portugal revived this Order and made it a reward for civil and military merit. Comes in three classes: Grand Cross, Commander, and Knight. Can be awarded to foreigners." That is a pretty neat little gem to find on a Commonwealth medal bar. Jeff
