Guest mafrost Posted 11 May , 2003 Share Posted 11 May , 2003 My grandfather, Charles Edward FROST was supposedly trapped in a submarine during WWI and at some stage of the war was gassed. Does this sound plausible? He survived, though disabled, until during WWII. He was from Torquay, Devon, so which company/unit would he have been likely to have belonged to, please? Michael Posted 12 May , 2003 Share Posted 12 May , 2003 Madalene This is certainly plausible. Before nuclear power, submarines were powered by batteries which in turn were charged by diesel engines. If the acid in the batteries mixes with salt water, chlorine gas is generated. If your grandfather's sub was trapped on the bottom, there is a possibility that she was damaged and that salt water had entered the boat. Also, there is always water in the bilges of boats / ships and any spillage of acid into the bilges would have the same poisonous effect. Do you know which sub he was trapped on ?
