Beselare Posted 27 December , 2015 Share Posted 27 December , 2015 In Martin Middlebrook's excellent book The Kaiser's Battle', on page 60 there is a reference to a 'new' German light machine-gun being used. I am familiar with the heavy machine-gun but there my knowledge of MGs ends. Can someone please help me by putting a name (or number) that new gun and what was its range and speed? A bonus would be knowing how many were used in the spring offensive. Many thanks Bob
johnboy Posted 27 December , 2015 Share Posted 27 December , 2015 Possibly a sub machine gun. http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234797&hl=
Chasemuseum Posted 28 December , 2015 Share Posted 28 December , 2015 Germany developed several less well known weapons. The reference may be to the Bergman Neu-Art 15 http://world.guns.ru/machine/de/machine-gun-bergmann-1915-mg-15-na-e.html This example is in a museum in Brisbane. My apologies for the quality of the photo. Cheers Ross
Chasemuseum Posted 28 December , 2015 Share Posted 28 December , 2015 Another of the LMG varieties, this example is part of the IWM international centenary display which was in Melbourne earlier in 2015. The others in the exhibit are the common Maxim 08/15. Cheers Ross
Stoppage Drill Posted 28 December , 2015 Share Posted 28 December , 2015 If "new" in 1918, possibly Middlebrook was referring to the MP18 ? (aka Bergmann - there is a current thread somewhere else on the forum I think)
Beselare Posted 29 December , 2015 Author Share Posted 29 December , 2015 Thank you everyone. I don't suppose we will ever know which gun Martin Middlebrook was referring to, but at least I now have some possible examples. Bob
