bob lembke Posted 16 February , 2016 Share Posted 16 February , 2016 Yes, the good old Bergmann MP 18. World's first sub-machine gun, I believe, although I am not an expert. I think that only about 30,000 were ever made, and that it was planned to give each infantry squad leader one, just like each squad leader in WW II had a MP 42, to provide the squad some automatic fire. I have seen a rare photograph of a unit in two rows drawn up, each man had a shouldered MP 18, and they were being inspected by the Kaiser. I think that it was a training camp, not a formed unit. My father served in the Schwartze Reichswehr, after the war, after serving in a Freikorps, in a rural area, and my father's cell leader had a MP 18. They were very well equipped, few men, but four 77 mm field guns and 1000 shells under hay in a farmer's barn. They and the local police chief were not on the best of terms.
