Sue Light Posted 22 November , 2004 Share Posted 22 November , 2004 Does anyone have any idea where this memorial is? It's likely be in India, Pakistan, or Sudan - I thought probably Karachi, but the description of Karachi WW1 memorial on the CWGC site doesn't sound quite like this. This photo is pre WW2. Thanks - Sue
Terry Denham Posted 22 November , 2004 Share Posted 22 November , 2004 This doesn't appear to be a CWGC memorial. Unlikely to have a cross on top (especially in Indian subcontinent) and a clock would be a unique feature (if that is a clock on the front)! Looks more like part of a religious establishment. Sue Light Posted 22 November , 2004 Author Share Posted 22 November , 2004 Terry No, I don't think that it's a clock - a scan of that bit below. The wording on the curve to the left of the 'clock' is just visible at high resolution and starts: 'To the Greater Glory...' Sue
Guest Pete Wood Posted 22 November , 2004 Share Posted 22 November , 2004 All that marble - surely, it must be in Asia.... Might I suggest that you contact the very friendly bunch at the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA). They cover cemeteries in India, Pakistan and further afield. The website is at http://members.ozemail.com.au/~clday/cemrecs.htm
Sue Light Posted 22 November , 2004 Author Share Posted 22 November , 2004 Pete Thankyou for the link - it's a fascinating site. When you seen headings like 'Church of Scotland burials in Assam', you can tell you're in for something out of the ordinary. However, they seem a bit coy about giving contact details. I'll put the photos on a web page and then try the Rootsweb India list - I'm sure that most of them must hang out there. Sue
