Terry Denham Posted 21 November , 2004 Share Posted 21 November , 2004 Perce Many different types of stone are used for CWGC headstones - often sourced locally. Everyone gets used to the familiar Portland Stone but there are many other different types of whitish stone used - Hopton Wood and Boticcino Limestone to name only two. You will also find red, yellowish brown and green headstones. In the UK and some colder countries you will often find a black granite being used and a black slate is often used in the UK as well (this is possibly what you saw as it is frequently seen in Wales and the West Country). There are several threads and some pics of the different types on the Forum. I'll see if I can track them down. http://1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?showt...&hl=hopton+wood amongst others
