Guest shenkursk Posted 20 November , 2004 Share Posted 20 November , 2004 In the USA, this is normally because a helmet was painted by the veteran to wear with his American Legion uniform in parades. A gold helmet was a fashion must-have for the Armistice Day parade! Jeff

Guest shenkursk Posted 21 November , 2004 Share Posted 21 November , 2004 I do not know if they did or not (though I suspect not - gold is particularly associated with the American Legion organization.) Quite a number of Brodies helmets were issued to US troops and came back here to the USA, where I suspect your helmet got the fancy make-over. With the magic of modern commerce, it could be discovered at a yard sale, traded a few times over the years, sold and shipped overseas, etc.
Andrew Upton Posted 21 November , 2004 Share Posted 21 November , 2004 I should point out that it wasn't just Brodies painted like this - I have a M16/17 German helmet shell which (underneath the thick black paint and car body filler that some moron used on it) was painted gold, and I don't think this ever left the UK. I believe some British Legions used similarly gold painted helmets.
