HERITAGE PLUS Posted 15 November , 2015 Share Posted 15 November , 2015 I have a man who was demobilised at Shorncliffe in 1919. I know that he travelled home by train from Folkestone Junction to Newcastle. I would be grateful if anyone could tell me what the likely route may have been, Thanks Dave
bill24chev Posted 15 November , 2015 Share Posted 15 November , 2015 The most direct route would be Folkestone to London (Victoria or Charing Cross depending if he went via Dover or Ashford). Across London, from Victoria by Circle or district lines to Embankmen to change to Northern Line (no Victoria Line in 1919), to Kings Cross; from Charing Cross by Northern Line to Kings Cross. Then Kings Cross to Newcastle on Great Northern Railway to Doncaster then North Eastern Railway to Newcastle, the Train would be a through train on East Coast Main Line However if enough troops were being demobbed on that day a Special train may have been put on for them which could have meandered in a general Northward direction to include Newcastle.
