Hi Saranne, and welcome to the Forum.

Although I have not read it, I've heard that Eye Deep in Hell is pretty good. Actually if you click on the search function and select the book reviews section, with the title in the search field you'll be able to bring up the other threads which have been about the book in the past.

Good Luck, Andy

I have 'Eye Deep in Hell' by John Ellis, published by Penguin Classic Military History.

I would reccomend it Its mainly discusses the day to day lives of the soldiers in and out of the trenches.

Eye Deep in Hell is great! Another contemporary work is The War in the Trenches by Alan Lloyd. Two newer works you might consider are: Hot Blood and Cold Steel by Andy Simpson and Trench Warfare by Stephen Bull. The last one has chapters on The Trenches, The Specialists, the Gunners, Gas, Tanks and Cavalry, etc. All three are heavily illustrated (I like pictures!) and have personal vignettes ala MacDonald.

Enjoy your holiday!
