What were the main reasons for the Gallipoli campaign and was helping Russia the most important factor?

Wow... this is a pretty broad questio. I would consider reading Gallipoli by Alan Moorehead. I thought it was a well written and easily read. It might not be definitive, but I think it may answer a lot of the questions you have at this point.

Phew, now there's a question. I'm with Andy. Moorehead is a good source to start with but there are plenty of other references which delve into this answer.

To address part of your question. Yes, assistance to Russia was undoubtably a major factor - but THE main one....now that's a topic for debate.

In a sentence - get the Royal Navy off Istanbul, threaten to bombard, get Turkey to capitulate, one prop knocked away. Now read Moorhead! Phil B

Thomas...try "Defeat at Gallopoli" by Nigel Steel and Peter Hart. Useful and fun to read.
