JMB1943 Posted 31 October , 2015 Share Posted 31 October , 2015 Chris, Nice looking wood on those----what, if any, clean up have you had to do ? Also, marking to 12th ? W R V on the stock---can you ID that, and markings on the butt-plate tang ? Regards, JMB
4thGordons Posted 31 October , 2015 Author Share Posted 31 October , 2015 I haven't done anything on any of them except clean the bores when I first got them (and after shooting) and wipe the metalwork over with an oily rag. although thinking about it I may have given the wood on the first one a rub over with Linseed Oil when I first got the rifle 15 years ago. That one has had the barrel recrowned also (not by me). The butt tang is 3 L F (Lancashire Fusiliers) below crossed out C L F 39 on the side of the butt it is 12thWRV MDC 7 I do not have a definitive ID on that no. shippingsteel Posted 1 November , 2015 Share Posted 1 November , 2015 Nice collection of rifles Chris (as always.!) Does your first one (1896) have any other Canadian issue markings.? I note the M&D buttstock marking = Canadian issue Cheers, S>S

I bought it from a well known dealer/collector who was in Alaska at the time. Unlike the others this one has a channel in the fore-end for the clearing rod. It had apparently been used for target work as the crown has been professionally redone and it shoots very well, Chris Chris
trajan Posted 1 November , 2015 Share Posted 1 November , 2015 12thWRV MDC 7 Just a thought - West Riding Volunteers?
trajan Posted 1 November , 2015 Share Posted 1 November , 2015 Had a spare minute to google and found: Collecting Metal Shoulder Titles, by Ray Westlake, and in the West Yorkshire Regiment section, under the subtitle "Volunteer Battalions 1918" there is the mention that the battalions of the West Riding Volunteer Regiment became the Volunteer Battalions of the W.Y.Regiment, and that: "12th Bn became 6 V.B." The link was: https://books.google.com.tr/books?id=A9mXAwAAQBAJ&pg=PA153&lpg=PA153&dq=12th+west+riding+volunteers&source=bl&ots=m-IEGdvuW0&sig=EmOf-wmXR7S68H8oMUP5bq6stJY&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CBoQ6AEwAGoVChMIzLiD19juyAIVC7UUCh0mVAGK#v=onepage&q=12th%20west%20riding%20volunteers&f=false Not saying, of course, that that "WRV" IS what your marking is for, but perhaps a possibility? trajan Posted 1 November , 2015 Share Posted 1 November , 2015 Chris, Another idle minute (Sundays are preparation days for Mondays three classes, and so boredom does set in...). There's a thread here on the West Riding Volunteers: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3763
