Ive read the bit on pip,squeak and wilfred. Regarding the 1914 star. now the bit i dont understand is about the wearing of the silver rosette on the ribbon, when the decoration itself is not worn.

Does this mean if the bar 5 aug to nov 22 is not on the medal, they wear the silver rosette in its place?

Can they wear both at the same time, or is the rosette for civilian dress or whta?

It is my understanding that the silver rosette means the same thing as the bar does on the 1914 Medal, so the rosette should not be worn when the medal and bar are worn. The rosette is to be worn on the ribbon bar only and it means the same thing as the bar on the medal ribbon.

Naturally, this means that the rosette is not an item of civilian dress.

The idea is that when the full size, or miniature, medal of the 1914 Star is worn, it is worn with the bar sewn to the ribbon. When only a small section of the ribbon is worn on the uniform, the silver rosette is supposed to be sewn in the centre, to represent the bar.

However, I have seen many examples, both on miniatures and full sized medals, where the recipient has sometimes used the rosette in place of or in conjunction with the bar, which can look rather odd.

A similar etiquette is used for the Battle of Britain clasp and the 1939-1945 Star.
