Landsturm Posted 16 November , 2004 Share Posted 16 November , 2004 Granatenwerfer, Minenwerfer... weren`t these the German mortars around 1916? Where they the first ones? What kind of mortars (or similar type of weapons) did the Germans have earlier? What was the first? Excluding rifle-grenades...
Max Poilu Posted 16 November , 2004 Share Posted 16 November , 2004 Landsturm, There is a big difference between these different types of mortar. The Minenwerfer being more of a traditional high trajectory small artillery piece why the aptly named Granatenwerfer is more a 'grenade-mortar' or 'grenade-launcher'. The Granatenwerfer was introduced at the end of 1915. All you might want to know can hopefully be found in this previous discussion: http://1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?showt...=granatenwerfer
Robert Dunlop Posted 16 November , 2004 Share Posted 16 November , 2004 The minenwerfer was introduced before the war, although there was a dramatic increase in the numbers and variety as the war progressed. The original design followed on from observations made in the Russo-Japanese War. Robert
