MBrockway Posted 15 January , 2016 Share Posted 15 January , 2016 Slightly off topic from your original Q re 17/KRRC, but Martin Gilbert has just unearthed a very useful publication giving the records of service of a very large proportion of the schoolmasters in the OTC (Junior Division). Here are the entries for Wilson's Grammar School ... List A - those Wilson's masters who actually served in the school OTC and either went to the Front or were retained for service in the school OTC. Bold denotes a fatality. ... List B - those Wilson's masters who had NOT served in the school OTC, but were mobilised for war work ... Ernest Smith, while on List B, was appointed to serve with the school OTC effective 23 Oct 1919, which falls outside the scope of the document, hence his not appearing in List A. Also I don't believe I sent you this Army List and LG material I researched when we worked on this topic earlier: Wilson's School OTC officersEDMONDS, John2/Lt effective 16 Apr 1910: hereProv Capt effective 01 Oct 1910: hereLt effective 18 Jan 1911: hereCapt effective 27 Apr 1912: here1914 Annual Army List - Capt, Unattached List (TF) serving with Wilson's School OTC1915 Annual Army List - Capt, Unattached List (TF) serving with Wilson's School OTCCeases to serve effective 16 Feb 1920: hereFOLEY, Michael James Aloysius2/Lt effective 16 Apr 1910: hereLt effective 01 May 1911: here1914 Annual Army List - Lt, Unattached List (TF) serving with Wilson's School OTC1915 Annual Army List - Lt, Unattached List (TF) serving with Wilson's School OTCKNIGHT, Thomas Haroldt/2/Lt effective 03 Nov 1914: here2/Lt effective 03 Nov 1914: hereRelinquishes Comm effective 16 Oct 1919: hereWOOD, Ernest2/Lt effective 03 Nov 1914: hereResigns comm effective 20 Jun 1923: hereSMITH, G. I guess that confirms both the son and the Lambeth building firm! brummell - any possibility that Lewis Whitehead, Jnr could be an Old Wilsonian? hdhfg Just to confirm that Lewis Ewart Whitehead was indeed Lewis Whitehead's eldest son born 27 August 1894, he had been to the front in 1914 with the 1/5th London and was repatriated, injured April 1915 and then transferred to his Father's battalion as 2nd Lt, promoted to Lt 9 Sep 1915 and then transferred to RFC in January 1916. Fought with 60 Squadron but was wounded in a Dogfight 30 Jul 1916 over the Somme. Repatriated again and was assigned to the newly formed 65 Squadron, in May 1917 he became Squadron Commander but during the squadron training he suffered 2 Crashes the first a minor one in a Bristol Scout, but following the re-equipping with Sopwith Camels he wrecked one of those August 1917 breaking his thigh. Passed fit again in March 1918, he joined his Squadron in France but was reported missing, presumed Killed 20 May 1918 following a Dogfight near Albert. He is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial as a Captain although he was acting Major (not Gazetted but shown in RAF record) Credited with 5 kills, but not all were single handed so not considered an "Ace". He was an old boy of Dulwich College and is on their memorial as well as the memorial at All Saints, Woodham (near Woking, Surrey) where his father had retired to.
