Remembered Today:

19th Battalion MGC in Russia

I am looking at the military career of Francis George Crosswell who re-enlisted in May 1919 and was sent to Murmansk in July with, or to join with, the 19th Bn MGC.

I can find no war diary at TNA for this battalion in Russia and the LLT orbat for the campaign does not list it. Yet a list of Military Medal recipients lists 10 from the battalion won while in Russia.

One possibility is that only a part of the battalion went to Russia - there are MGC companies that went, could one or more of them (252, 253 & 280) be from the 19th Bn? The downside of this is that I have seen one suggestion that 252 & 253 Coys were from 8th Bn.

Any ideas?

Hi

I looked through the Confidential List, Crosswell is not mentioned but there are quite a few Russian awards listed to just MGC but there are some to 201st Bn, 252nd Co, Motor MGC, 8th Bn, 19th Bn, 280th Co, 253rd Co.

Hope that helps

Peter

Thanks - further evidence that the 19th Bn was there.

Crosswell was only in Russia a few weeks (Aug-Oct 1919) - I was hoping to find something about the 19th Bn's activities in this period.
