Guest billysiv Posted 14 November , 2004 Share Posted 14 November , 2004 Having been led up the garden path by family anecdote I now discover that my wifes Gdad did not serve on B class Destroyer HMS Wolf but on the Monitor HMS General Wolfe which was part of the Dover Patrol and used to shell German Positions in Belgium. Any information out there on this ship. Bill
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 14 November , 2004 Share Posted 14 November , 2004 HMS General Wolfe a Lord Clive Class Monitor was built on the Tyne at Palmer's Shipyard, Jarow. She was launched on 9th September 1915 and sold for scrapping in May 1921. For info on the Dover Patrol see: http://www.dover-kent.co.uk/history/ww1a_dover_patrol.htm Dave
Guest R Pope Posted 15 November , 2004 Share Posted 15 November , 2004 General Wolfe was originally built with a twin 12-in. turret removed from old battleships. Heritage Plus' thumb shows her as refitted with one of the 18in. guns removed from Furious when she was converted to a carrier. The big gun was fixed to fire on the starboard beam, traverse being accomplished by swinging the vessel. Interestingly, the sights were trained on a buoy placed by a destroyer on a reciprocal bearing to the real target, since the target was usually out of sight. One other monitor in her class, Lord Clive, was similarly modified. They were in action off the coast of Belgium in 1918, but accomplished little.
