What does it stand for, please?

His Majesty's Troop Ship? Trawlers were HMT, I think.

No, I'm fairly sure that would be R.I.M. (Royal Indian Marine) at this period

HMTS stands for His Majesty’s Telegraph Ship. HMTS Alert is a WWI example of such a ship and was a part of the GPO but carried the HM title. HMTS Alert served a long career and was lost in in action in WWII.
