hmsk212 Posted 14 November , 2004 Share Posted 14 November , 2004 Hi Keith It sounds like your father was a DEMS Gunner. These were Army or Navy Gunners placed on Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships. Although he himself would have been Royal Navy, based at HMS PRESIDENT III, the ships he served in would have been Merchant Ships and not HMS. SS LA PAZ, 6548 tons, was attacked by U109 on 1st May 1942. Although damaged she was later salvaged and repaired. HMS TREMADOC BAY was an Accommodation Ship based at Devonport.
