Demi Gunners

Hi my father was a Demi Gunner durring the second world war he sailed Liverpool to USA he was aboard ss LA PAS when she was attacked by U boat 109

off the coast of Florida 1942 he was also aboard a ship called the Cornwood i dont know anything about this and his last ship was Hms Tramadockbay

Any information on any of these ships would be appreciated

Hi Keith

It sounds like your father was a DEMS Gunner. These were Army or Navy Gunners placed on Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships. Although he himself would have been Royal Navy, based at HMS PRESIDENT III, the ships he served in would have been Merchant Ships and not HMS. SS LA PAZ, 6548 tons, was attacked by U109 on 1st May 1942. Although damaged she was later salvaged and repaired. HMS TREMADOC BAY was an Accommodation Ship based at Devonport.
