von Smallhausen Posted 19 June , 2015 Share Posted 19 June , 2015 Gentlemen, I recently found two 18pdrs shrapnel grenades here the place where I live. At least I think it is an 18 Pdr. Same diameter etc,, only the right item is 2,5 cm or 1 inch shorter. I have been googling to know more about 18 pdr grenades but was not able to find information. Inside the grenades was only mould . What is this short grenade? Was wondering if there are artillery specialists among the GWF users? Thank you for any help With kind regards from Flanders, Jef
RodB Posted 19 June , 2015 Share Posted 19 June , 2015 Can you post exact lengths and diameters ? Also, do shells include the fuze socket ? That was a socket screwed into the mouth of the shell into which the fuze screwed. Doesn't look like it, and it only added about 1/3 inch to shell length. My info is that Mark VI shrapnel shell (1915) was 9.294 inches long without fuze socket, 3.275 inch diameter; My calculation from diagram is that Mark I (early WWI) was about 9.19 inches without socket. von Smallhausen Posted 20 June , 2015 Author Share Posted 20 June , 2015 Hello Rod, Thank you for your answer. The tallest is 23,8 cm which is 9.37 inch. The right one is 22cm = 8.66 inch. Diameter 8,3 cm= 3.27inch. I'm not familiar with Inches so I used a converter on my PC You must know Rod, when cleaning a bit, a lot of dirt got of the shrapnel, also a lot of oxidated iron. Both would suit a N° 80 fuze. Have here some relic fuses in my collection. The area where I live was battlefield in october 1918. I found the smallest shrapnel in the area where Pte Norman Harvey gained his VC. In this way it has a special meaning to me. Again, thank you for your advice, Jef
assafx Posted 21 June , 2015 Share Posted 21 June , 2015 the size difference is a bit strange. i used this source to compare measurements to this item: the diameter of this one is 8.39 cm and length is 23.8 cm as your tallest one. Assaf
von Smallhausen Posted 21 June , 2015 Author Share Posted 21 June , 2015 Thank you for your reply Assaf. This morning I visited a Military Fair in Zillebeke and a collector of artillerygrenades told me the short schrapnel was used for Anti Aircraft fire. Anyone could confirm this please? Kind regards, Jef
