Sculls Posted 10 June , 2015 Share Posted 10 June , 2015 SPALDING, Edward Lawrence - AIF service # 134 An article appeared in the SMH 23 Sept 1918 p.8 (TROVE) headed:- CHEERING THE BRAVE SOLDIERS FROM WEST FRONT. VESSEL TORPEDOED where SPALDING'S name, along with six others appear. A check of their records show they also returned on the BOONAH. But the BOONAH wasn't torpedoed so are presuming it was in a convey with the ship ?? that was hit, then sank. Thanks any assistance.
Joe R Posted 11 June , 2015 Share Posted 11 June , 2015 On 23rd July 1918 Boonah avoided a torpedo but that torpedo hit her escort the AMC Marmora and sank her. Boonah was bound for Australia with returning troops, The UB64 was the culprit. http://www.uboat.net/wwi/ships_hit/3982.html Respectfully, Joe R PS Boonah was the ex German Melbourne captured at Sidney in 1914.
