munchkin Posted 12 November , 2004 Share Posted 12 November , 2004 Hi All, Below is a photo (you might have seen it before), It shows my Great Grandfather in uniform. On his sleeve there is a downward pointing stripe. I believe that this is a long service stripe. Now my problem is that it seems that he joined up in 1915 and was back in England by 1916, so how can he have this stripe ??. Any help would be very much appreciated. Glynn. Arnie Posted 12 November , 2004 Share Posted 12 November , 2004 Glynn Sorry I cannot see a stripe, do you refer to his left Arm? I think the good conduct badge is worn on the right sleeve. Arnie
munchkin Posted 12 November , 2004 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2004 Arnie, It is the left sleeve of my grandfather. I thought that a stripe that was this way round meant long service ?. Glynn.
SPotter Posted 12 November , 2004 Share Posted 12 November , 2004 A badge in this position would be a 'Good Conduct Badge'. If he only served for 1 year then this would not have been earned, so I am at a loss to explain its presence. Steve
Guest Chip Minx Posted 13 November , 2004 Share Posted 13 November , 2004 It looks like only half of the chevron, so I vote for it being a crease in the sleeve material. Chip
GavinH Posted 13 November , 2004 Share Posted 13 November , 2004 He may have returned to England in 1916, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he left the army. He may have qualified in 1917 while serving in a reserve battalion. Regards Gavin
munchkin Posted 13 November , 2004 Author Share Posted 13 November , 2004 Thanks guys, I was under the impression that it was for long service, i stand corrected. Many thanks. Glynn.
