Both he and I have searched the internet and books extensively and we cannot identify it. We don't believe it is American or British, as we have looked through exhaustive lists of those countries' medals. I am not sure if it is in fact a WWI medal, however it seems quite old and that is my best guess. Here is a picture of the medal: If anyone could tell me anything about it I'd be very grateful. I initially thought it looked Belgian to me and while I was wrong about that, the info I gathered along the way did lead me to the right one.
