Attested in 5th Leicesters on 10 December 1912, went to France on 28 February 1915 with the first line battalion and was discharged at the age of 24 years and 7 months on 31 December 1917.

Medal rolls say that he was also with 8th Leicesters. If this is correct, it ought to have been between the re-numbering of the territorial battalions in early 1917 and his discharge - from the 5th - at the end of that year.

Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. He's recorded in the 24th August 1917 edition of the Melton Times as being wounded.

as post #4

Date of Discharge: 31/12/17 Age on Discharge: 24-7

24 years and 7 months from Dec 1917 gives a birth about May 1893....

Melton Mowbray newspapers carried a report, so 1911 Census may assist in narrowing down the contenders.

Can you clarify how you've become interested in him, researching a Roll of Honour (which one?) or a relative?

He may not have died until many years after WW1, despite being wounded severely enough for a SWB.

You already have the information that he attested to 5th Leicesters on 10th December 1912, which would make him 19 years and 6 months old at that time...

He entered France on 28 February 1915, so has the 1915 Star as well.

With an SWB, the Western Front Association might have some Pension records as they are currently working through a lot. You obviously know that about 70% of WW1 Service Records were lost in bombing in WW2, so you may have to look around Melton Mowbray for more local knowledge of him.

Good luck!

He's shown as being a local man in the paper, but being discharged in December 1917 he's not listed on the 1918 AVL.

I would say that 240130 was a resident of Melton when he enlisted in 1912, county territorial battalion and all.
