Phil Wood Posted 10 May , 2015 Share Posted 10 May , 2015 I am reseaching Horace Arthur Turner, 5586, R Berks died with 2nd Berks at Bois Grenier, 25 Sep 1915. His service number suggests he enlisted in 1899 (aged 18). He does not appear to have received either a QSAM or KSAM - suggesting his service was with the 1st Bn R Berks. In 1911 he is living as a civilian with his wife and child - he married in 1908. His 12 years would have been up in 1911 - so, he may have had no commitment to serve in 1914. He landed in France on 6 Nov 1914 with the 2nd Bn R Berks So ... 1. He signed on with the Special Reserve and was mobilised in Aug 14 - hence retaining his regtl no. or 2. He volunteered in 1914 and used to make up the numbers of the 2nd Bn when they returned from India. Would an ex-soldier volunteering in 1914 be given his old number? Phil Wood Posted 10 May , 2015 Author Share Posted 10 May , 2015 Is it possible he remained enlisted as a reservist ? Craig I guess so - perhaps more likely than the special reserve? Would keep the number current. Would a move to Special Reserve mean a new number?
