Hello All,

Any suggestions for the best books about 2nd Ypres and the Zonnebeke area?

It would be nice to own WW1 books but costly, public library if possible?

Regards Ray

"Magnificent but not War" by John Dixon is, in my opinion one of the best books on 2nd Ypres.

For the Canadians, part of the "For King and Empire" series by Norm Christie is "The Canadians at Ypres". This is just the Canadian participation in 2nd Ypres or (basically an abridged version of this book) is "Gas Attack" also by Norm Christie.

2nd Ypres is also covered in a few "Battlefield Europe" volumes and also in Lyn Macdonald's "1915".

For an almost "day by day" account of 2nd Ypres in good detail, try "The Official History of the War - Military Operations France and Belgium 1915" Vol.1. (although John Dixon's book also gives a good "day by day" in a less dry way).

Hope this is enough to be going on with.

Dave.

Forgot to mention.... John Giles's "Flanders Then and Now" and , if you're looking for specific units, then many Regimental and divisional histories have been re-printed.

Agree about Magnificent but not War (ISBN 1 84415 002 X) This is a new book. first published 2003.

Might try 'Gas! The Batle for Ypres'. (ISBN 0 920277 01 2) Published in Canada 1985 although covers all participants not just Canadian.

Try "Welcome To Flanders Fields" by Daniel Dancocks. A very good history of the activities of the 1st Canadian Division at 2nd Ypres.

  • 1 year later...

I am doing a search on good books for the 1915 battles and this thread seems to have some good offerings. I am bringing it back up in case some other Pals are looking for some recommendations.

Some more...

The Battle Book of Ypres by Beatrix Brice (1927, 1987)

From the St.Lawrence to the Yser by Frederic Curry (1916)

Passchendaele and the Battles of Ypres by Martin Marix Evans ( 1997) (don't be mislead by the title)

Beneath Flanders Fields by Barton, Doyle and Vanderwalle (2004)

Battlefields of the First World War by peter Barton (2005).
