Jist for you Petrick.

This image was the backgound to a History Channel "Lest we Forget" screen on Remembrance Day.

The Black Kangaroo Feathers......., The Red poppies.

Incidently there was a near catastrophe for this year's Shrine Service. Someone noticed that the Red Poppies planted in time to bloom by today were actually gunner be Yellow. They had to whip them out & substitute imitation reds.

Enjoy

Pat

The Lighthorseman picking the poppies must be one of the most well known Lighthorse images of the war.

A chap came into the Army Museum a couple of weeks ago and told the story of how his dad was in the field ambulance in ww1.

Around December 1918 when troops were being shipped back to Australia he was given the task of looking after those troops infected with Influenza. The hospital was at Woodmans Point(south of Freo).

He became friendly with one soldier who gave him a tobacco tin full of Flanders poppy seeds.

When he took them back home he planted them and from those original seeds, the offspring are still growing today. He donated some to the museum.

Okay pat,

 seen this picture before also is in the middle of the australians at war series in the lighthorse book.Which coincidently never mentions the 13th alh. not even in the roll off honour  ....but thats what you get ive you can't boost on being in sinai, beersheba or other sandy places.

Still not convinced its a 13th trooper as they only mention

a veteran light horsemen gethers anemones growing wild at BELAH. The winter rains which had swollen the Jordan gave rise to a brief blooming of spring flowers in the desert.

abd why the heck they always portray him the wrong way round... or has he forgot how to wear his slouch hat and his stripes??

close mate but still not convinced

picture included..13th alh at gresaire wood france

Well no pulling the wool over your eyes then Petrick!

On the Telly, the feathers appeared jet - black. As Andrew says, it is almost an Aussie icon, but not too many countries would be happy with an image of their warriors picking flowers.

So! He's not 13ALH, they're not poppies, it aint Flanders, and its a mirror image

Anything else you might like to criticise? ;) seem to remember something about Hate belts or something.

There is another 'section' photo of the 13th on the AWM site. I had not seen 'yours' before, because its not on the 13 ALH search [but soon will be].

g'day pat,

its still a nice picutre..emotional one. Incidently don't want to start again about troopers issued swords. but this is the third trooper picture ive seen on the western front with the po 8 trooper sword. Makes you wonder did they made the pictures the same day, the background house is the same in all three? Did they share the sword? Ore is their still a possebilety that they had.... Seeying as the were used more as a cavalry unit then a mounted infantry one...would make sence.

<_< now i wonder why they forogt me.

Have a xerox copie of the 13th alh regimental diary..laking 1918 iff you don't already got it.

picture added 13th alh france ore belgium

Hello Petrick,

sorry for not answering earlier but have been interstate working. My wifes grandfather was born in Aus but his parents came from Hasuum in Jutland, Denmark.

Attached is a photo I took at the Light Horse Memorial Park just south of Seymour in Victoria. There is not much to see there now.
