Thank you, many times! I am plagued with the damn things here - only once have I seen a S.98/05 by another maker! And a rough guess is that for every 5+ 1917 Mauser-made ones I have seen (Turked and non-Turked), I have only seen one 1918 - and I have yet to find a 1915 or 1916 example... I was initially surprised but not greatly so to read that Mauser contracted out the actual manufacture of these: there was quite a bit of that going on. Note also the end date of the contract - 1920! The bayonet makers seem to have got Berlin over a barrel on this type of thing, as more than one contract for bayonets signed early on in the GW was for wartime and post-war manufacture...
