Have been doing some research on this shell but haven't found all the info on the markings

These are the stamping from top to bottom ( I will attach a picture )

1. U with 17 inside = ?

2.1877 = ?

3. looks to be a circle with 18 inside = ?

4. Q.F. 18 Pr. ,the r is smaller and has a line under it = quick fire 18 pounder

5. F.S. = forged steel

6. II. = mark 2 shell

7. C.G.E. = Canadian General Electric Co. Toronto,Canada

8. 3-1-16 = date of manufacture I assume March 1,1916 or January 3 1916

9. F L = ?

10. Circle with 18 inside = ?

11. Circle with 17 inside = ?

Thanks for your reply

Which of the designations gives you this information

Shrapnel shell

85 fuse

The other question I would have that I did not ask in my original post is where and when was the shell manufactured ?the history on the shell is that it was in an antiques shop in Toronto in the 60 s and then sat in a basement for 50 yrs ,the shell was actually turned into a lamp at one time I have another one with its brass housing attached but it's different with very few markings ( but that may be a different post at a later date.

Hi odintiger,

Can you post photos of the fuze including the base?

The marking C.G.E. is the manufacturer's mark of Canadian General Electric Co. Toronto, Canada. The mark 3-1-16 is the date of manufacture.

Regards,

Michael.

Well I can look right through it as I said it was a lamp at one point it is still mounted on a copper base and hollow inside I will post a couple of more pictures in a little while

And we are getting close to figuring out what all the stampings stand for that's great!!!!

Thanks for all the help
