My father was in the RAMC aboard the HMHS Kalyan when it was involved in the evacuation of troops from the Russian Expeditionary force in Archangel in 1919. I believe it was iced in for a long period of time.

Does anyone have any information?

H. M. H. S. Kalyan, was used as a 756 bed hospital while frozen in the ice during the winter. She left for England on 3 June 1919. She was heavily used by the American Expeditionary Force.

Thanks for that.

I have found another reference to SS Kalyan as a troopship. Is it possible that a that a troopship became a hospital ship later? The original Kalyan was a P&O ship built in 1914. I assume there is only one ship by that name at any one time?

Yes it is possible for the same ship to have been used for both purposes.

Yes she was a P&O ship.

Out of interest I have just managed to buy a photo taken by the USA Russia Expeditionary Force of the HMHS Kaylan frozen-in in the Dvina River at Archangel. Fantastic coincidence that it was on sale just at this time.
