Guest tonyrob48 Posted 8 November , 2004 Share Posted 8 November , 2004 My father was in the RAMC aboard the HMHS Kalyan when it was involved in the evacuation of troops from the Russian Expeditionary force in Archangel in 1919. I believe it was iced in for a long period of time. Does anyone have any information?
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 8 November , 2004 Share Posted 8 November , 2004 H. M. H. S. Kalyan, was used as a 756 bed hospital while frozen in the ice during the winter. She left for England on 3 June 1919. She was heavily used by the American Expeditionary Force. Dave
Guest tonyrob48 Posted 10 November , 2004 Share Posted 10 November , 2004 Thanks for that. I have found another reference to SS Kalyan as a troopship. Is it possible that a that a troopship became a hospital ship later? The original Kalyan was a P&O ship built in 1914. I assume there is only one ship by that name at any one time? HERITAGE PLUS Posted 10 November , 2004 Share Posted 10 November , 2004 Yes it is possible for the same ship to have been used for both purposes. Yes she was a P&O ship.
Guest tonyrob48 Posted 14 November , 2004 Share Posted 14 November , 2004 Out of interest I have just managed to buy a photo taken by the USA Russia Expeditionary Force of the HMHS Kaylan frozen-in in the Dvina River at Archangel. Fantastic coincidence that it was on sale just at this time.
