Remembered Today:

6th Bn Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Drill Hall

Tom Lang

Recommended Posts

I took the attached photos of my local Drill Hall in April, 2014.

The Drill Hall is now occupied by South Lanarkshire Council, Leisure & Culture (whatever that is).

The address is:

Victoria Street,

Larkhall,

Lanarkshire,

Scotland.

Kindest Regards,

Tom Lang.

When I was in the A.C.F. (Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)) as a young teenager, I spent many, many hours in this building.

Apart from the main hall and offices, there was an indoor firing range for up to 9mm ammo.

Internally the place has been renovated as a 'leisure centre'.

Kindest Regards,

Tom.

A while ago I posted a photo of the drill hall of the 5th Scottish Rifles (with which the 6th battalion was later amalgamated) in West Princes Street, Glasgow; it is Here in case anyone is interested.

Do you know where I could find out the whereabouts of the 7th Battalions Headquarters? My great Uncle lived in the Gorbals. Cheers for the great photograph above.

Victoria Rd, Glasgow.

Army list does not give the number of the Road. An old Post Office directory will probably nail it.

You could also try the Cameronian's Museum in Hamilton.

Have a look here: http://portal.historic-scotland.gov.uk/designation/LB33688 and http://canmore.org.uk/site/172565/glasgow-govanhill-35-coplaw-street-drill-hall You can find the building on Streetview at the corner of Victoria Road and Coplaw Street.

Part of the building is now residential. Our database notes include: HQ, A-H 7 Cameronians "Builders discovered a time capsule hidden behind a brass plaque in a former Army barracks they are converting to create luxury flats. The plaque and glass jar capsule were hidden in the entrance way in 1884 to mark the laying of the foundation stone for the drill hall of the 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers in Coplaw Street. The building, which Laurie Construction is now refurbishing, was designed by Lieutenant Wilson, of the regiment's B Company."

3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers 35 Coplaw St 1884-5 John Bennie Wilson (1849-1923), in a 'Cheerful domestic gothic style’.

We have not yet uploaded Scotland. I'll see whether more a recent version of our database has more to offer.

I have just found it in "Glasgow, a City at War" (by Osbourne and Armstrong) - 35 Coplaw Street, Victoria Park, but see that I have been beaten to it!
