Grootebeek British Cemetery

The 'Grootebeek British Cemetery' (ww1 cemetery) is situated rather out of the village of Reningelst, in the hamlet called "Ouderdom".

Does anyone know if there was at that time a hospital, ccs ... in its neigbourhood ?

Thanks,

Gilbert Deraedt

Gilbert,

From Michael Scott, The Ypres Salient (p. 40)

"Burials from this area (...) were carried out in the cemeteries in Reningelst. But at the start of the Battle of the Lys the Field Ambulances stationed here created a new burial ground as Ouderdom Military Cemetery, which was later renamed after the stream which runs either side of it."

No mention of a Casualty Clearing Station... But wouldn't that have been too close to the front lines ? (Approx. distance only 10 km ?)

Hallo Gilbert!

I've been told that there was a CCS in the neighbourhood.

Hope I'll find something more to prove!

  • 8 months later...

A while ago, I received some information that there has been a CCS in the neighbourhood of this cemetery ( 'Grootebeek British Cemetery' ). This CCS would have contained a surgery room.
