Glenn Warnes Posted 7 November , 2004 Share Posted 7 November , 2004 What is the story behind the ‘Halfway House’? I believe it was an old German dugout near Hellfire Corner. If it existed does it still exist as it sounds like it was quite a large dugout and is referred to in ‘A Privates View of World War 1’ by Bert Bishop Spider
robbie Posted 7 November , 2004 Share Posted 7 November , 2004 I found 1 small thread whilst Googling: The 30th July 1917 tells of them moving up to Halfway House near Zillebeke, having spent the day at Lock No 9, 'preparatory to attack'(Passendale). http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GREAT...2-02/1013291195 Robbie
Mike Cross Posted 7 November , 2004 Share Posted 7 November , 2004 Halfway House is clearly marked on a trenchmap on Karel Pylyser's website, specifically the map of Hooge/Zillebeke. http://home.scarlet.be/~pylyserk The location is referred to in the preparations for 3rd Ypres in the diaries of the 1st Royal Irish Rifles and 2nd Rifle Brigade, both of 25th Brigade. Mike Cross Posted 7 November , 2004 Share Posted 7 November , 2004 Ahh. Sorry. A shortened version works. http://home.scarlet.be/~pylyserk ..and then click on gallery. Halfway House is around midway between Zillebeke and Birr Crossroad. MC
