Steven Broomfield Posted 21 February , 2015 Share Posted 21 February , 2015 The 13th and the 18th Hussars were separate regiments in the Great War (amalgamated 1922). As the 18th were in France from the beginning, but the 13th were on the Indian Establishment, they're more likely candidates. Does your gran father have a name? Steven Broomfield Posted 21 February , 2015 Share Posted 21 February , 2015 According to the regimental history, a Lieutenant R C Hill joined the 13th on 19th Match, 1916. It is noted he had all his kit stolen the following day (in camp on the Tigris, not far from Kut). He seems to have started the war as RSM of the regiment (number 10802), and was awarded the MBE. Unfortunately there seem not to be any other mentions of him. The regimental history has been reprinted, and is very good: http://www.naval-military-press.com/thirteenth-hussars-in-the-great-war.html
Steven Broomfield Posted 21 February , 2015 Share Posted 21 February , 2015 Given his prior service as RSM, there may be records held by the successor regiment, The Light Dragoons. http://www.lightdragoons.org.uk/enquiries.html The museum of the 13th/18th (in Barnsley) has closed, and it seems will be co-located with that of the 15th/19th in Newcastle in 2017. Steven Broomfield Posted 21 February , 2015 Share Posted 21 February , 2015 Nice work (although I think his Delhi Durbar award would be as a Squadron Sergeant Major). Looking through the regimental history, there are photographs of loads of officers and NCOs ... but not of Captain Hill. Nor is he in a group photograph of the officers taken in 1920. Annoying.
