Guest andyjb Posted 19 February , 2015 Share Posted 19 February , 2015 Hey guys, I've recently got these through some inheritance and I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about them? I've researched most of it but there's still a few things that I'm not too sure about. But here's what I know - The insignia is from the Royal Engineers1st Pitcher The St means it's strengthened. 298 is the lot number Polte Maigdeburg is the manufacturer (German?) Mai 1917 - May 1917 - Production date SP406 is the inspection mark for Patronenfabrik Polte Magdeburg 2nd Pitcher 75 DE C is for the gun it was used in (75mm field gun) A.RS is the production company (Atelier de Construction de Rennes) 101 is the lot number (does the 'L' mean 'lot'?) 08 was the year it was made. What's the 'G' and 'L' on the left and right side? What's the 'D' after the year (08)? So, does anyone know any more about these? If there's many others like them? I couldn't upload them all for some reason so I've put them in an imgur album http://imgur.com/a/Sv6jA/ Thanks in advance for any information! redbarchetta Posted 19 February , 2015 Share Posted 19 February , 2015 Andy, Making jugs such as these from cartridge cases is a relatively common form of trench art, as their design/shape obviously lend themselves to this purpose. As far as your examples go, they are well made, if a little unimaginative, and nice to have a pair. Can't help on the markings, though, sorry! MikB Posted 19 February , 2015 Share Posted 19 February , 2015 I had an idea that Sp<nnn> signified 'Sprenggranate', or HE shell? The handles look to be made from 7,92x57 Mauser 'S'-patrone cases. Regards, MikB
