Stephen White Posted 14 February , 2015 Share Posted 14 February , 2015 Two days ago fellow forum member Neil Evans (shropshiremad) supplied me with information from the Register of Soldiers Effects that my Great Grandfather (see my signature) died in No.13 General Hospital, Boulogne. I have found lots of information about the hospital and some superb photo's including some via Twitter from fellow forum member Sue Light, I have so far though found none that specifically say that any I have found of wooden huts used as wards are from No.13 General Hospital. This leads me to a simple question, were the huts used at such hospitals built to a standard design (I assume by Engineers/Labour Corps) or did they vary from hospital to hospital. Thanks in advance. Stephen, Here are the links to 2 previous Forum Threads which discuss ' Huts '. Regards, LF
Sue Light Posted 14 February , 2015 Share Posted 14 February , 2015 Stephen On the IWM Collections website which I mentioned, there are a number of photos of 13 General Hospital and they show at least two different types of hut - this is one, but a search of the IWM images will find several more. Image = IWM Q29164 Sue Thank you both for the links, they are proving to be informative reading. Interesting that with some of the earlier accommodation huts the fuggy (warm and damp) atmosphere proved to be the perfect breeding ground for many diseases, also the comment on the IWM photo Sue posted was B Hut slight cases, so with my first comment in mind would seriously wounded be housed in such huts or the main building or would it have been a case of where room was available. Stephen, As you say, the wooden ' Hut B ' is captioned as being for slight cases, whereas, the Surgical Wards No.3 and No.4 at No.13 General Hospital were in the main building, where conditions were much better. Attached are IWM photos 29162 ( Surgical Ward No.3 ) and 21963 ( Surgical Ward No.4 ). Regards, LF Surgical Ward No.

Stephen White Posted 21 February , 2015 Author Share Posted 21 February , 2015 Back at looking at this after a stay in hospital myself! Looking at the images from the IWM collection, some of the photo's of the General Hospital in Boulogne state No.14 General Hospital (not No.13), they are quite clearly taken at the Casino in fact the images state that, however the LLT states that No.14 General Hospital was at Wimereux from Oct 14 to Apr 19 (all the images are dated 6th October 1916). So did No.14 move to the Casino, or are the images mislabeled ? Regards Stephen
Sue Light Posted 21 February , 2015 Share Posted 21 February , 2015 No.14 General Hospital was in the Casino Wimereux, and also next door in the Hotel Splendide - the former for ORs and the latter for officers. I'll look out a photo. Edit: Both towns had a Casino Sue
